Lifebox Foundation is dedicated to improving surgical safety in low and middle-income countries, where essential operations carry life-threatening risk. Founded in 2011, Lifebox works to ensure that surgical teams around the world have the tools and training needed to provide the safest care possible for their patients.
Lifebox works to ensure that surgical teams around the world have the tools and training needed to provide the safest care possible for their patients. Our flagship programme has been to develop and distribute a low-cost, low-resource-adapted oxygen monitor, called a pulse oximeter. The only piece of medical equipment on the surgical safety checklist developed by the World Health Organization, the oximeter is considered essential for safe anesthesia provision and yet nearly 100,000 operating theaters around the world are forced to deliver surgery without this basic tool, putting millions of lives at risk. Today we are also working to reduce surgical site infections through a checklist-based approach, and to facilitate teamworking and collaboration in the operating room.
