We work to support those in extreme poverty to negotiate the civil justice system. Our vision is justice for the vulnerable: everyone has the right to help/representation in court. We provide non-legal assistance to those facing court proceedings for debt and fines. 80% of those we help are lone mothers.

We also train volunteers in community groups. Our volunteers go to court with the debtors. They secure a sensible instalment plan or help the debtor to develop a defence. They then help the debtor with the benefit or tax credit problems which have usually caused the debt. Our work is designed to try to help relieve the stress and mental illness caused by debt which has such a detrimental effect on family life and children.

We campaign on issues that derive from the casework including on ensuring that well-being of children is inserted as a priority into all aspects of welfare reform and child poverty legislation. We also campaign on the lack of affordable credit for the poor which increases poverty and stress.
