Charity information

St Wilfrid's Hospice (south Coast) Limited

Our purpose is to provide high quality specialist palliative and end of life care in our community, in collaboration with the NHS and other local services.

All of our services are provided free of charge with care provided on our Inpatient Unit; in patient’s own homes; in residential and nursing care homes and at our Day Hospice. We also run an outpatient clinic; offer bereavement support; chaplaincy; complementary therapies; physiotherapy and an education and training centre.

Founded 1987

  • Mission statement

Paragraph 3 of our Memorandum of Association reads: “The Charity’s object for which the association is established is the relief of people suffering from cancer and other terminal conditions and the relief of the carers and families of such people who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress. ”

Referrals to the Hospice grow annually. When the Hospice opened in 1987 it received 188 referrals, last year this had risen to over 900 and it is set to rise by at least another 17% over the next five years. This, coupled with a population which is significantly more aged in the Coastal West Sussex area than the rest of England, means the growing demand for our services can no longer be met. We serve one of the oldest populations in England - 25% are aged 65+ against an average of 17% across the rest of England. This is set to increase further, and by 2026 the number of 65 years olds will increase by 38% and over 85 year olds by 69%.

We are now caring for over 50% of our patients out in the community in their own homes, residential and nursing care homes, enabling patients to choose where they are cared for. The teams supporting these patients made over 6,000 visits last year.

Our services operate in a defined geographical area from Arundel to Emsworth, all along the south coast and north up to the Downs. Referrals are received for patients registered with specific GP surgeries within our catchment boundaries and we also take self referrals.
