Talking Money

Talking Money is based in the Lawrence Hill ward of Bristol, which is one of the most income deprived areas in the city and supports clients through four services:

• Debt Advice
• Benefits Advice
• Financial Education
• Energy advice

All services are free, independent, legal advice that can be accessed in person, by phone, by email or online via our website. The advice and support we provide is a lynch pin to clients finding stability and solving other areas in their lives.

Founded 1990

  • Mission statement

In 1990, a small group of individuals were appalled and affronted by the abject poverty that they saw in Bristol. They decided to set up a charity which tackled poverty and financial problems and that has been Talking Money’s mission ever since, to tackle poverty and empower people to take control over their lives.

We work in Bristol and the surrounding areas increasing financial inclusion by supporting people with their debt, benefits and fuel poverty with free and independent advice. Many clients deal with complex and distressing circumstances, including disability, illness, housing issues, debt and reduced income. The knock-on effect has a big impact on families.

The implementation of welfare reform has created unprecedented levels of need with 50% of those surveyed not feeling confident they would be able to keep up with rent and household bills. We’ve had a 7% increase in demand with 6885 enquiries in 2016/17 and while we are providing a high-quality service our small team is stretched. A client recently told us, “If it wasn't for you I would not know this help existed. It has helped my health issues... We can also look forward to having food and doing own laundry. ”
