Home-Start Elmbridge is an independently run family support charity, which has been supporting vulnerable families in Elmbridge since May 2000. Home-Start Elmbridge recruits, trains and supports volunteers, who themselves have parenting experience so that they can offer one to one practical and emotional support to families and children in their own homes.
Our ethos is to help parents build better lives and better futures for their children. We act as a preventative organisation that help families with young children deal with whatever life throws at them. We support parents who are experiencing a wide range of disadvantages such as poor mental or physical health, physical or learning disabilities. We also support children living in lone parent families and those whose parents are struggling to cope for a variety of reasons including bereavement, postnatal depression, social isolation, low income, poverty and debt, and subjects of domestic abuse, of parental drug or alcohol dependency.
The five years between birth and school are vital for a child’s development. What goes on inside a family during these years strongly determines the opportunities and life chances children have. Children who are raised in a stable, loving, family environment are more likely to have a positive and healthy future. We get involved from the first years of a child’s life to try to catch the problems early, stop them from getting worse and where possible prevent them from happening in the first place.
