Holding On Letting Go
Holding On Letting Go
We offer bereavement support weekends to children and young people in Kent (and their families) who are struggling to cope with the grief of losing a parent, sibling or someone very special. They may have been bereaved by illness or a sudden death such as suicide, road traffic accident or murder. They often feel isolated in their grief and don't know how to express the emotions they are feeling. As our name suggests, we help bereaved children to hold onto precious memories and let go of sadness.
Our aim is to support grieving children, young people and their families in Kent and Medway. To do this, we run non-residential bereavement support weekends, which are staffed by our trained volunteers.
The children are encouraged to share their feelings in a safe space, ask questions and learn strategies for dealing with difficult emotions. The weekends are very creative, with art and music therapy sessions. Outdoor activities also play a major role in helping the children to deal with feelings of anger, grief, hurt and abandonment.
A key aspect to the weekends is that they offer the children who attend the chance to meet and spend time with others who also know what it's like to feel the intense pain of grief. At school, bereaved children can often feel isolated, as they may be the only one whose parent has died for example, so this opportunity to make new friends who truly understand what they are going through is invaluable.
Research shows that childhood bereavement without appropriate/timely support can lead to many problems of anxiety and depression later in life. Often, without support, bereaved children can dis-engage from school and can also become involved in anti-social behaviour such as crime, alcohol and substance abuse.
Alongside the support weekends for children and young people (aged 6-16) we also run parent/carers sessions, so that the whole family receives support and develop coping strategies to move forwards confidently.
