The House Of St Barnabas

The House of St Barnabas is a charity working to break the cycle of homelessness and social exclusion in London. By providing training, work experience, and employment opportunities in our not-for-profit members’ club, we help those affected by homelessness on their journey back into work.

Founded 1846

  • Mission statement

Limited access to education and employment is a key factor in the perpetuation of homelessness. Although 37% of homeless people in the UK have no qualifications, only 19% are taking part in training or educational activity.

Our mission is break the cycle of homelessness, and we are working towards supporting 100 people per year back into lasting paid work. In doing so, we advocate decent, stable employment for all, and invite others to partner with us, joining us on our shared journey to creating a fairer London.

Our integrated Employment Academy runs three three-month Employment Programmes per year for up to 20 participants at a time, offering City & Guilds accredited qualifications in hospitality or business administration. Despite the barriers they face, our participants complete 80 hours of work experience within our social business, a not-for-profit members club, as well as completing training sessions in financial literacy, wellbeing and CV-writing among many others. Each participant is matched with a mentor and an Employment Support Officer, who they continue to work with for twelve months after graduating. We believe we are unique in offering this full package, and our graduates have reported that this is a key factor in their future success.
As of April 2017, 68% of our alumni have gained employment within twelve months of graduating from our programme.

The House Of St Barnabas aims to:

    • Our primary aim is to support people affected by homelessness and social exclusion back into lasting, paid employment.
    • Our programme is designed to increase confidence, wellbeing, and personal effectiveness, which are vital skills for those not ready to take the step into full-time employment straightaway.
    • Our club allows us to offer ongoing opportunities for participants to attend and contribute to our cultural event series of talks, concerts and performances. We believe that culture is for all.
