Project Motorhouse Ltd
Project MotorHouse is attempting to save a derelict site on Ramsgate’s seafront and use the commercial rents from that site to subsidise the youth work it does in Thanet. It is both a social enterprise and a charity. To date we have raised £300k and commissioned designs from award winning architect Guy Hollaway which are about to be submitted for planning. We do projects with disadvantaged students from the Royal Harbour Academy to improve their skills.
Project MotorHouse is a community initiative to save a vital part of Ramsgate’s infrastructure. The steel frame of the derelict West Cliff Hall supports the main access road to the harbour and the first 40 metres of the West Cliff Promenade. PMH and Thanet District Council jointly commissioned a survey which shows the frame is significantly corroded and needs replacing.
As TDC will have to pay for a new frame, state aid rules dictate it needs to dispose of the site by open bid. The site’s restrictions make it unappealing to a commercial developer and with its well-developed plans, PMH is well placed to win the bid.
PMH’s mission is to redevelop the building in a way that is financially sustainable and will subsidise its youth work. Our plans arose out of consultations with local businesses, youths, schools, residents’ associations, arts and environmental organisations. The building will house an outdoor theatre/cinema, two indoor cinemas, a restaurant, a bar, a café, meeting rooms and a gallery.
While the intention is that rents from the redeveloped site will subsidise the work of the charity, the continuation of PMH’s youth work is not dependent on winning the bid. Ramsgate is one of the UK’s most deprived coastal towns. Thanet’s youth unemployment is the highest in Kent and its educational attainment the lowest. But our youth show tremendous potential and PMH is determined to continue helping them develop the skills to create a better future.
