Womankind was founded in 1986 and our mission is to help women and girls to improve their mental health and well-being, to enable them to experience a better quality of life. Womankind has focused on specific disadvantaged groups of women with little or no access to community mental health services. Our current provision includes a telephone helpline, a befriending service, specialist sexual violence and trauma counselling, general professional counselling, and group psychotherapy.
To provide for the relief of mental distress and the resulting suffering and isolation experienced by women and girls, by the provision of information, advice and assistance.
In response to identified need, Womankind has developed services for survivors of rape, sexual and/or domestic abuse; Refugees, trafficked women and asylum seekers; Deaf and hard of hearing women; Transgender women; and isolated women with enduring mental health problems. Our current key priority is to establish an Instant Messaging web based secure support service (as an extension to our helpline) that will enable more distressed young women and Deaf women to access vital help.
Many of the women we work with have experienced very abusive backgrounds and these experiences have deeply affected their ability to have healthy relationships and to fully participate in community living. Helping women to come to terms with what are often very traumatic events is essential to their recovery.
