Tom's Trust

We provide tailored emotional and psychological rehabilitation to children aged 0-16 with brain tumours and their families. Through an innovative charitable partnership, we have founded the UK’s first complete rehabilitation service within a hospital environment. We are initially doing this at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

We are the only complete multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team delivering this level of care in a UK hospital.

  • Mission statement

Tom’s Trust facilitates the inclusion of Paediatric Oncology Clinical Psychologists working with the other therapists in the rehabilitation team in a pioneering approach. Rehabilitation is a process of assessment, treatment and management in which the individual and their family or carers are supported to achieve maximum potential for physical, cognitive, social and psychological function, participation in society and quality of living.

Paediatric Oncology Clinical Psychologists are a key component to assessing the children’s emotional and physical needs and providing the best information to other therapists in the rehabilitation team, allowing maximum and informed support. Our Clinical Psychologists focus on reducing psychological and emotional distress and promoting and foster heathy emotions, attitudes and habits. They also help with issues of anxiety, depression and relationship issues, which so often occur post-treatment.

Of the 252 children who have been through our service, their functional independence has improved by 11%.

Our work adds value to the very basic NHS provision, which is not designed or intended to manage the complex rehabilitation requirements of young brain tumour sufferers.

Our aim, in the long term, is to ensure that all children in the UK with brain tumours have access to Clinical Psychology within a rehabilitation team. Our work will not stop until we have achieved this.
