Founded 1985

  • Mission statement

RICE - The Research Institute for the Care of Older People has been helping older people live better lives since 1985. The charity grew out of the recognition that, due to their age, older people were often excluded from taking part in research studies, for example with new drugs. Yet it was older people who were most likely to receive many of those drugs once they had been approved, which in some cases led to serious adverse effects. This prompted the idea of a Research Institute to look into all aspects of ageing and to focus on improving everyday life for older people, including the proper evaluation of medicines and other treatments that they might commonly receive.

Today, RICE focuses on research, diagnosis, treatment and support into dementia and neurodegenerative diseases in older people Our ultimate ambition is to help find more effective treatments and a cure for Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias. We are based in our own purpose built facility, The RICE Centre, on the same site as The Royal United Hospital (RUH) located in Bath although independent from the District General Hospital (DGH). Whilst the RICE Centre is based in Bath and provides much-valued memory clinic related services for local people, we see people from a much wider geographic area, particularly in relation to our research projects that contribute to improving both national and international knowledge about dementia.
