Grassroot Soccer (GRS) is an adolescent health organisation that uses the power of football to educate, inspire, and mobilise young people to live healthier lives and be agents for change in their communities.

Founded 2010

  • Mission statement

Grassroot Soccer (GRS) believes that in spite of the risk and vulnerability faced by many adolescents in the developing world, there is an immense opportunity to harness the collective energy of young people into a youth-led movement to improve their health and education. GRS sees football as the key to engaging young people and empowering them to live healthier lives.
EDUCATE: GRS trains coaches to deliver a suite of evidence-based, age appropriate curricula to young people in and out of schools. GRS’s football-based activities increase HIV knowledge, normalise discussion of sexual and reproductive health, and impart invaluable life skills. GRS participants demonstrated increased knowledge and reduced stigma about sexual health and HIV.
INSPIRE: GRS coaches are young people aged 18-25 from the communities where they work. GRS coaches develop deep relationships with the young people they work with, becoming mentors who lead by example and inspire young people to make healthier decisions. In communities with 75% youth unemployment, 80% of GRS coaches graduate into education, employment, and training.
MOBILIZE: GRS knows that family and community engagement is critical to improving the health and lives of young people. GRS coaches and staff conduct door-to-door campaigns to build support for our programs and provide information about critical health issues. GRS participants are more likely to test for HIV, adhere to treatment, and access other health services than their peers.
