Etatu works in the villages around Msambweni, on the south coast of Kenya. We sponsor children in secondary school and vocational training and work with Msambweni Primary School & the local community secondary day school. We train teachers, provide school uniforms, school bags, books and supplies. We oversee the school jigger clinic. We fund and help a community centre & orphans' feeding scheme. We set up & run our 'learning banda', which serves as a library, resource centre & meeting place.
We believe in the transformative power of education – few experiences in life can make as much difference as learning or acquiring knowledge. Etatu aims to improve the life-chances and standard of living of the inhabitants of Msambweni, Kenya, through raising achievement in school, building confidence and developing skills.
Etatu aims to raise standards of education and thereby to raise hope, aspiration and prospects – so that children can progress from primary schooling to vocational or secondary schooling; so that people can compete effectively for any jobs that become available, better access enterprise funding, or develop their own businesses. They can then more readily improve the material conditions of their lives themselves.
We focus our support on farming and fishing families, women raising families on their own and orphans and those living with or affected by HIV/ Aids. We are particularly involved with the education of girls.
We work in partnership with individuals and groups working in the community, to build capacity and develop their ability and confidence.
We would like to help build a community which is resourceful: “ingenious, capable, full of initiatives, especially in difficult circumstances. ”
Etatu aims to:
- The education of children & young adults to enhance their life chances & develop their capacity & skills in such a way as they are better able to meet their needs & participate more fully in society.
- The prevention or relief of poverty of those in need by reason of financial hardship or other disadvantage and to work towards raising the standard of living of those in need.
