Action Through Enterprise (ATE)

ATE works in partnership with communities in Lawra District, Ghana to reduce poverty. ATE achieves this through school feeding to 1035 hungry children to improve access to education, enables start up of small, profitable businesses, and dry season farmers to produce crops all year round, delivers an apprenticeship scheme for young women to gain vocational skills and provides practical support to 150 disabled children and their families.

Founded 2012

  • Mission statement

ATE has a mission and vision to establish sustainable economic growth and a measurable reduction in poverty in Lawra, Upper West Region, Ghana.

Lawra is located in a neglected corner of the country, which has been described as having a 100% poverty incidence. In real terms this means that many households affected by months of food insecurity each year, can afford just one meal per day, whilst the adult literacy rate languishes at just 19% (4 times lower than Ghana's national average), with extremely limited opportunities to eke out a living as people strive to provide for their families and enable their children to reach their full potential.

ATE is making a measurable difference to the lives of the people we work with by improving access to education, improving inclusion for marginalised disabled children and their families, and increasing opportunities for sustainable income generation for people to provide for themselves and their families, now and in the future.

  • Aims

Action Through Enterprise (ATE) aims to:

    • To reduce barriers to accessing and completing basic education.
    • To support small business owners to kick start sustainable businesses, increase profits and savings.
    • To support dry season farming to increase crop production, improve food security, household nutrition and potential for profit all year round.
    • To support those with few training opportunities available to them to gain life-long vocational skills for future income generation.
    • To provide practical and emotional support to isolated disabled children (and their families), improve their access to education, healthcare and inclusion within the community.
