Football Beyond Borders
Football Beyond Borders
We are an education charity which uses football as an engagement tool to tackle challenging behaviour and raise the level of educational attainment of disadvantaged children and young people, many of whom are at risk of exclusion. We do this through our unique football themed literacy curriculum which puts a young person’s passion for football at the heart of their education. This FBB Literacy Curriculum develops literacy, creativity and problem solving skills through the prism of football.
We exist to address the educational inequalities which mean that students from low income backgrounds are four times more likely than the rest of the student population to be permanently excluded and have limited lifetime opportunities.
We do this by putting a young person’s passion for football at the heart of their education.
We work with students identified by our partner schools as being at risk of exclusion. We work with these students during the crucial Key Stages 2 and 3 before the challenging behaviour has become entrenched and difficult to reverse.
We use our unique football-themed literacy-focused curriculum to re-engage the students by encouraging creativity and an enthusiasm for learning. We aim to produce significant and lasting changes in the behaviour, confidence, self-belief and aspirations of our student groups.
Quality education is of intrinsic value to an individual’s development as an autonomous, unique person. It provides the capabilities and skills to shape and pursue life goals. It increases employment prospects. It builds community cohesion. The combination of football activity and project learning can be used as a magnet to attract the hardest to reach students.
For all young people regardless of their background to feel valued, confident and empowered to become active citizens and achieve their goals and for society to provide the opportunities for them to do so.
Football Beyond Borders aims to:
- We aim to increase the schools that invest in our FBB programme. We have identified target cluster schools in Lambeth and Southwark and aim to extend our delivery from 25% to 40% of these schools.
- We aim to expand the delivery of our parallel female specific programme that uses football to re-engage under-performing female students by encouraging physical activity and creative learning.
- We aim to commence a school holiday football focused programme that provides disadvantaged children with physical activity and educational stimulation to address deficits in holiday opportunities.
