Nottinghamshire Bereavement Trust

The Bereavement Trust was established in 1988 to provide Freephone Helplines every evening of the year (no exceptions! ) and to 'extend a sympathetic listening ear' to those who are grieving.

Founded 1989

  • Mission statement

Many people find difficulties in coming to terms with the loss of a loved relation or friend. Far too often we hear that those near to them tell them to 'Move on' or 'Get a Grip' etc. It is not as easy as that!

As families are now much more dispersed than previously, and neighbourhoods not as closely knit, after the 'excitement' of the funeral many people find themselves alone in their grief.

This is particularly evident in the dark Autumn and Winter months, when, with curtains drawn, the only 'friends' who they have contact with live on either Albert Square or Coronation Street.

The NBT offers Freephone Helplines every evening of the year (no exceptions) from 6. 00 - 10. 00 pm when most other help is closed down. A team of trained Volunteers 'extend a sympathetic listening ear' to those suffering the pain of bereavement. We give what help, comfort & practical advice we can. We cannot, of course, do what our Callers desperately want - and 'bring back the dead'. But by simply listening - giving out time freely without restrictions, in utmost confidence, we can help a little by offering a 'safety valve' which can pre-empt deeper depression.

The number of 'regular' callers, some of whom have become telephone friends, perhaps indicates that we do help!

Starting with an English Language Freephone line, we now offer support
    in Asian and Chinese languages.
    General Helpline 0800 435 455
    Asian Languages Helpline - 0800 9177 416
    Chinese Languages Helpline - 0800 0304 23

  • Aims

    Nottinghamshire Bereavement Trust aims to:

    • Through our three Freephone Helplines to become more widely known to, and more used by, people of all ages, colour, faith and nationality who are suffering the pain and distress that may a bereavement
    • To improve our service by introducing an e-mail response team, which will necessitate recruiting and training more Volunteers.
