Remark! Community Ltd
Remark! Community Ltd
Remark! Community is a charity set up by deaf people to work with the deaf community to reignite the deaf community spirit. A community unified by our own language and culture. We promote British Sign Language in all the work we do and our main aim is to reduce social isolation for the signing community. We work closely with deaf children, youths and older people to improve the quality of their lives. We encourage active lifestyles and improved community cohesion.
Remark! Community has been uniquely established with the support of a commercial company, Remark! , creating ongoing opportunities to benefit from the company’s efficiency and resources.
Deafness is a unique disability. Due to communication barriers many deaf people cannot access mainstream provisions. They also lack a disability support network commonly found with other disabilities that do not face communication barriers.
Deaf BSL users have an entirely different language to contend with, combined with being unable to hear their day to day life is an ongoing challenge. Even the use of British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters does not provide equality, the BSL users are reliant on another preventing them from communicating fluently.
These language barriers consequentially prevent the deaf community from functioning as part of wider society, resulting in equality and social isolation becoming a major concern.
The aim of Remark! Community is to promote equality of access to services in British Sign Language, to include advocacy, information and advice, and to increase socialisation through deaf clubs, lunch clubs, sports and recreation.
Our concept is to provide an environment in which BSL users can be truly equal, an environment which enables BSL users to access and benefit from services, and attend social occasions using their own native language. A luxury the rest of us take for granted every single day.
Remark! Community Ltd aims to:
- Promoting equality for deaf people
- Relieving social isolation and exclusion for deaf people
- Assisting older deaf people with financial hardship
