Calibre Audio Library

Calibre Audio Library is committed to providing a regular supply of recorded books, free of charge to people with sight problems, dyslexia and physical disabilities which prevent them reading a print book. We have over 8,800 titles, professionally recorded unabridged by actors and broadcasters. We provide fiction and non-fiction titles, carefully selected to appeal to members, both children and adults. We have a Young Calibre library for under 16s, with its own collection of 1,500 books.

Founded 1974

  • Mission statement

Calibre Audio Library brings the pleasure of reading to people with sight problems and print disabilities, by publishing, purchasing and lending audio books.

    Our core values are:
    • To deliver excellence in our service
    • To be responsive to the needs of our members
    • To embrace new technology to improve our service and benefit our members
    • To guarantee a positive team and family spirit for staff and volunteers
    • To always act with integrity
    • To ensure financial probity

Only 6% of books are available in accessible formats in the UK and for the two million people who are blind, partially sighted, plus those who are dyslexic or have other print disabilities that prevent them from accessing traditional printed materials, that limitation is a fact of life. It shouldn’t be that way and Calibre is committed to ending this exclusion.

  • Aims

    Calibre Audio Library aims to:

    • 6% of books are available in accessible formats. For 2 million people with print disabilities that stop them from reading books, that limitation is a fact of life. Calibre aims to end this exclusion.
    • Our vision is an end to reading exclusion for print disabled people.
