Cambridge Youth Opera
Cambridge Youth Opera (CYO) expands the horizons of young people through the arts. We work with young people to create age appropriate productions to the highest possible standard, as well as providing workshops and theatre visits.
Our activities include everything that goes to make up an opera, including singing, orchestral playing, stage management, lighting and all elements of production design and build.
We are an open access, community organisation. We do not charge for participation.
Cambridge Youth Opera (CYO) is an open access, community organisation, formed in 2011. We aim to give young people in the Cambridge area the opportunity to experience all the elements that go into staging an opera. Our singers, orchestra, and design, stage and technical crew are mostly between 12 and 21 and attend schools and colleges in and around the Cambridge area. Depending on the demands of the production, we involve singers as young as eight and up to 25.
Our activities are open for everybody and we engage young people in all elements of performing and staging opera. We do not charge for participation.
Our key objectives are to develop the confidence and maturity of all participants, while engaging them in opera as a living and accessible art form. Our aim for the period 2016 – 2018 is to build on prior good work, while extending our reach, building partnerships with schools and like-minded organisations and where possible, finding ways to work with harder to reach groups.
The past two years have seen significant developments for CYO, both in the quality of the activities we offer and in our governance and the way in which we operate as an organisation. We aim to cement this work to ensure that CYO becomes and remains a well-managed and sustainable organisation.
This will provide a strong and essential foundation to continuing our core activities: staging new productions and providing exciting opportunities for young people to experience opera.
Cambridge Youth Opera aims to:
- To give young people an opportunity to perform a fully staged opera, of the highest standard, including young people in all elements, singing, orchestra and production team
- To develop the confidence and maturity of all participants
- To support and encourage the healthy development of young voices
- To be as inclusive as possible, including the provision a service which is free from direct costs to participants
- To introduce the participants and audience to opera as a living and accessible art form and to bring new audiences to opera
