United Kingdom & Europe World Literacy Foundation

The World Literacy Foundation was founded to address the growing rate of illiteracy, particularly amongst marginalised young people.
We acknowledge education as a basic human right and we believe that knowing how to read and write can break the cycle of poverty.
Our mission is to lift children and youth out of poverty by delivering effective and sustainable programs aimed at eradicating illiteracy. Through early intervention, we aim for every child to develop a love and habit of reading.

Founded 2013

  • Mission statement

We believe in creating strong partnerships, assisting grassroots organizations, and maximizing existing resources to create innovative and cost-effective methods of bringing quality education to the world. As we step into the future, we are blending our approach of traditional learning (building libraries, teacher training, and research) with digital learning.

Since its creation, the WLF has successfully achieved a number of key projects, in the UK and internationally:

Ran the International Literacy Day campaign in the UK: encouraged over 500 schools to participate and raise awareness about illiteracy
Collected and distributed 6000 pre-owned children’s books to child focused community groups in London, Birmingham and Liverpool
Partnered with 430 schools in the UK to provide community literacy projects including read-a-thons and book exchanges

Released the ‘The Economic and Social Cost of Illiteracy”: research was conducted over a period of 18 months to outline the social and economic impact of global illiteracy. Our work reached over 500 Million people
Convened the World Literacy Summit in Oxford, which brought together the world’s leaders, educators, and teachers together in a collaborative effort to find solutions to global illiteracy.
Served as a key voice on the UNESCO high-level round table committee for Literacy.

    Our main literacy services include:
    Book collection and distribution
    Mobile learning
    Advocacy & Community mobilisation
