Tell Me A Tale

Tell me a Tale is a charity that creates accessible arts opportunities for diverse community groups, in particular people with learning disabilities. Since 2012 it has focused on providing people with learning disabilities the opportunity to see an accessible theatre show at a professional theatre venue. It has achieved this by creating Frozen Light- a theatre initiative that creates multi-sensory touring theatre productions for audiences with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).

Founded 2007

  • Mission statement

We create theatre specifically for audiences with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD). "People with PMLD have more than one disability, the most significant of which is a profound learning disability. All people who have profound and multiple learning disabilities will have great difficulty communicating. Many people will have additional sensory or physical disabilities, complex health needs or mental health difficulties. " - (About Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, factsheet – PMLD Network). Theatres rarely cater for these high-level needs. This means that people with PMLD do not have equal opportunity to access theatre in a meaningful way. There is currently no theatre in the UK created specifically for adults with PMLD. We want to change this. Many people with PMLD experience the world through touch and smell which is why they get a lot of enjoyment through a multi-sensory theatre experience. We use sign, music and one to one interaction to ensure that we provide an engaging and accessible experience for our audience.

Our goal is to have our work programmed in as many theatre venues across the country as possible, to give the most number of people with PMLD the opportunity to access entertaining, imaginative and exciting, theatrical experiences. We hope to reach a wider audience in areas where participation is currently low and allow more young people with PMLD the chance to experience and be inspired by performance.

  • Aims

Tell Me A Tale aims to:

    • To bring meaningful, inspiring and exciting theatre to as many people as possible with PMLD living in different parts of the country, particularly underrepresented areas we haven’t visited before.
    • To gain positive responses from our audience, including carers and family members, letting us know that the show has been a meaningful, engaging and enjoyable experience for someone with PMLD.
    • To continue to continue to educate and train the wider theatre community (such as marketing, box office, Front of House and management staff) in the importance of promoting accessible theatre.
    • To have our work valued and appreciated alongside mainstream theatre.
