Keynsham And District Mencap Society

We are a self funded local charity who provides social, emotional, educational and leisure opportunities for over 150 people with a range of learning disabilities, conditions such as Downs Syndrome, Cerebal Palsy Aspergers Syndrome, Autism and Deletion 4q Syndrome, and often physical disabilities too.
We run 9 clubs all targeted to different age groups and activities, that provide local people with learning disabilities opportunities in the same way as their “non-disabled" peers

Founded 1978

  • Mission statement

We want to raise the awareness of our charity and live in a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included. Our challenge, alongside people with a learning disability and their families, is to make this world a reality. Right now, people with a learning disability face inequalities in every area of life. We need to tackle the issues head on through tireless campaigning and the delivery of high quality support and services to the people who need us. We want to continue to improve on our current offering, provide our members with even more chances to experience new things but in a safe and secure environment that they are comfortable with.

The clubs we run all have a varied programme of confidence boosting activities, they are put together taking into account the individual care plan of each member. The activities range from cooking classes, to Zumba, community outings to a local restaurant the theatre, and even trying out the latest craze, group trampoline sessions. Everything we do is fully inclusive and is supported by our team of volunteers, all of whom are trained and invested in. Our members have the opportunity to take part in social activities, meet new and old friends, and be fully supported and secure. We have a strong emphasis that our activities must be tailored to helping to build self-esteem and grow confidence thus furnishing our members with essential skills required to enable them to become more self sufficient
