Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL)

AFRIL is a grassroots charity working with refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants living in Lewisham and South-East London. We are dedicated to alleviating poverty and social isolation, advancing education, and encouraging empowerment through community involvement. We provide free services including a supplementary Saturday School for children aged 4 - 11, an advice service, English classes for adults (ESOL) accompanied by a crèche, destitution relief and a food bank.

Founded 2006

  • Mission statement

    Our vision is for our refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to feel valued, included in society, and inspired to contribute to their communities.

    It is our mission to empower them to:

    • Acquire skills and knowledge;
    • Find out about and access services;
    • Gain volunteer experience to build their skills.

    We aim to deliver this by relieving poverty, providing education services for free, and increasing social integration.

    We provide a supplementary Saturday School, the Rainbow Club, for children aged 4 - 11, English (ESOL) classes for adults twice a week with a crèche to increase their accessibility, an advice service twice a week, and support for destitute families in the form of food, clothing and other essentials. Alongside this we offer social activities and volunteering opportunities, and are launching our Food Bank later this year. On average we support 120 clients a week and the Rainbow Club alone works with 66 children of 10 different nationalities all from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

    Our Values
    • Empowerment: build confidence and help people to help themselves.
    • Protection: uphold refugees’ rights.
    • Equality: celebrate differences, treat everyone equitably, and uphold human rights.
    • Engagement: involve communities, other organisations, and wider public.
    • Excellence: our goal - we value transparency, creativity, participation and learning.
    • Respect: everyone is valued, staff and volunteers are supported to realise their potential.

  • Aims

    Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL) aims to:

    • Advance education through a supplementary Saturday School for children from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds between the ages of 4-11, English classes (ESOL) for adults, and volunteering.
    • Relieve poverty through our Helping Hands Food Bank, providing food boxes and nutrition advice to refugees and asylum seekers, and a destitution fund to purchase essential items for families.
    • Ensure refugees and asylum seekers can access services they are entitled to and take more control over their own lives by providing an advice service twice a week, including legal advice.
    • Increase social integration and empowerment through social activities, volunteering, and allowing clients greater involvement in decision-making through initiatives like our Parents' Forum.
