Charity information

Sustrans is the charity making it easier for people to walk and cycle.

We are engineers and educators, experts and advocates. We connect people and places, create liveable neighbourhoods, transform the school run and deliver a happier, healthier commute.

Sustrans works in partnership, bringing people together to find the right solutions. We make the case for walking and cycling by using robust evidence and showing what can be done.

  • Mission statement

Sustrans is the charity making it easier for people to walk and cycle.

We have a vision of increased levels of cycling and walking making us all happier and healthier, living in greener environments with enriched local economies. We also introduce the joy of cycling and walking to people who’ve never had the confidence to try before.

We created the National Cycle Network - a comprehensive network of safe, attractive routes for you to explore by bike and on foot. Many are traffic-free corridors of wildlife, brimming with rare species of plants and animals whose habitats we support with our national biodiversity programme.

Cycling and walking have a pivotal role to play in tackling the national epidemics of air pollution, congestion and inactivity. We’re plugged into communities and decision makers. We know how to make our case with robust evidence and how to co-create practical solutions to the real problems we’re all facing. We believe that grassroots support combined with political leadership drives real change, fast.

Voluntary funding is a vital source of income for us. From maintaining the very special National Cycle Network, to influencing politicians at the highest level; when you join our movement, you’ll be securing a happier, healthier, greener future for generations to come.
