South Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Charities

Open Arts is a community arts and mental health project run as one of the charities managed within the South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (SEPT). Our main activity is the provision of community-based introductory arts courses during which participants are introduced to wider opportunities, culminating in a six-month studio placement option for course graduates. The project is open to anyone across south Essex with a mental health need and carers.

Founded 2002

  • Mission statement

The over-arching Open Arts mission statement is: 'Enabling well-being and recovery through creativity and community engagement. '

In delivering this mission statement and project aims, we are committed to promoting increased access/participation in enjoyment of the arts amongst our target client group. This includes introducing them to a selection of different art forms, developing their interests/talents and encouraging them to express themselves, promote enjoyment/appreciation of the arts and develop their interests/talents. This ranges from developing lifelong artistic interests/involvement to talent ID and encouraging them to take further courses at FE/HE levels.

Although the project is clearly about promoting mental health through access/participation in the arts, the emphasis is firmly upon the processes relating to involvement/enjoyment of the arts and creative self-expression, rather than mental health and disability. Through this access/participation we aim to empower residents to express themselves and benefit from the therapeutic impact of arts participation/access. The majority of participants/attendees will be accessing the arts for the first time, who will have had little previous involvement, if any at all. In that sense, the project consciously promotes the arts amongst new groups (geographically and ethnically).
