Charity information

Weavers Adventure Playground Association

Weavers Adventure Playground (Weavers) is a play space and community centre tucked away in the north east corner of Weavers Fields in Bethnal Green, East London.

Weavers has been a pillar of the community and played an essential role in the health and wellbeing of thousands of children since its foundation in 1974. Despite ups and downs, it has continuously been there for children of all cultures and religions in a part of London which has otherwise lacked suitable facilities for young people.

Founded 1974

  • Mission statement

Providing free play space for children: Weavers Adventure Playground aims to provide a welcoming, safe, friendly, multicultural, all-inclusive environment for children and young people up to the age of 16 to play five days a week, in which the young people come first.

Offering fun, friendship and physical activity: The playground provides an enriched play environment that aims to meet the developmental needs of every individual child and young person, enabling them to build on their own talents, interests and abilities and to extend their experiences within the playground and the local community.

Building confidence & resilience: Our Play Workers, Committee Members and volunteers work towards achieving this by following the nationally recognised Play Work Principles. We are committed to building professional and supportive relationships with all children and young people.

Developing creativity and skills: We wholeheartedly support a positive play experience that enables children and young people to lead their own play and encourages them to be involved in making their own choices including, for example, how they would like the Playground to be run.

Mitigating effects of poverty – improving life chances: Weavers takes pride in creating volunteering and training opportunities for our young people and adults from the local and wider community to enable them to prepare for employment.

  • Aims

Weavers Adventure Playground Association aims to:

    • To provide for local children’s right to play, so that more young people in a crowded part of Tower Hamlets gain the numerous benefits which come spending time at adventure playgrounds.
    • To promote inclusion and social cohesion, so that more children in the borough grow up finding it normal to mix with people from all cultures and backgrounds.
    • To support and promote healthy lifestyles for local children, through play and healthy eating, because Tower Hamlets has a one of the highest levels of childhood obesity in the country.
