Book Trust

Book Trust is the largest reading charity in the UK. We work to inspire a love of reading in children because we know that reading can transform lives.

Founded 1924

  • Mission statement

A love of reading changes lives. Children who are read to, for just 10 minutes every day, are 12 months further ahead by the time they get to school, and that gap continues to widen. Reading enjoyment is more important for a child’s educational success than his/her family’s socio-economic status.

1 in 3 children in the UK grow up in a house without any books. A quarter of all children leave primary school without basic reading skills and rarely catch up, creating cycles of poverty that can last for generations.

We encourage and enable parents and others to read regularly to their children, and we inspire children and young people to read for pleasure. Our innovative programmes put books, tools and guidance into the hands of those who would not otherwise have them. We build parents’ confidence to read to their children; give carefully selected books to every child under five; give extra support to the most disadvantaged children and families; partner with schools and others to get more children reading. We work to ensure that nobody misses out on the life-changing benefits that reading can bring, and we give support throughout a person’s reading journey. In this way we impact on child poverty (in London and across the UK) by enhancing education and social mobility, and by supporting vulnerable children and young people throughout their lives and in their transition to adulthood.
