Founded 1962

  • Mission statement

The Koestler Trust is the UK’s best-known prison arts charity. Founded in 1962, our ground-breaking work uses the arts as a catalyst for positive change in the lives of offenders and in the public’s perception of them. At the core of our work are the Koestler Awards – an annual awards scheme open to all in the criminal justice system. We also deliver pioneering mentoring and employment projects, providing bespoke support and guidance for ex-offenders who want to develop their arts practice or work in the arts and cultural sector. These initiatives harness the uniquely transformative power of the arts to help the beneficiaries learn the skills and gain the motivation to live creative, positive and productive lives.

  • Aims

    The Koestler Trust aims to:

    • motivate offenders, secure patients and detainees to take part and achieve in the arts, helping them transform their lives.
    • increase awareness of ex-offenders’ potential contribution to the arts and their communities
    • be a dynamic organisation, which achieves excellent quality and value for money, and engages and responds to its service-users
