Birmingham Opera Company

With no opera house, all our work lives in the peoples and places of Birmingham - a unique fusion of local volunteers and international artists delivering artistic, personal and social change.

Founded 1985

  • Mission statement

Opera can be the most powerful and communicative of art forms. Birmingham Opera Company is committed to sharing this belief with the broadest possble range of people. By involving ourselves in local communities and making local people the focus of what we do, not only do we offer the opportunity to engage with opera at first hand but also in return have our productions enriched by a wealth of human experience. Our work, preparation and presentation are governed entirely by this commitment.

“if I had to recommend one company to see over all the others to make opera visceral, meaningful, contemporary experience…BOC productions really show us what Opera can and should be” Tom Service, The Guardian 2014

“Imagine what Gareth Malone does with amateurs with The Choir on TV and multiply that by a hundred” – Brian Appleyard in the Sunday Times Culture Magazine 2014
