Cumbria Wheelchair Sports Club

CWSC promotes inclusion for the physically disabled by nurturing a lifelong involvement in sport - from grassroots to Paralympics! We're the only competitive club in the far North West of England.

Founded 2009

  • Mission statement

Our mission is to introduce physically disabled people of all ages (young and elderly), gender and religions to a variety of inclusive wheelchair sports so that they undergo a unique learning experience - our teaching that disability is NOT inability! Our qualified coaching staff are skilled in encouraging a new confidence and sense of achievement in those with even the most severe disability - members can play basketball, boccia, wheelchair football and tennis, table cricket, ice curling and wheelchair athletics - all in an environment infused with enthusiasm, acceptance and mutual support. The families of our players are also invited to come along to training and league matches - we believe this offers them respite from their caring roles and an opportunity to partake of social networking. Players showing the motivation are encouraged to undergo training for nationally recognised coaching qualifications - an educational opportunity that often provides the stepping stone to employment. CWSC consider this to be one of our most important provisions - since a great number of our participants are disadvantaged financially and through the social deprivation that is prevalent in this most sparsely and rurally populated county in England. After 6 years of operation, CWSC boasts exceptional equipment, some gifted Team GB Elite sportspersons, several satellite clubs, and ongoing success in its mission to promote independence, self-esteem, integration, education, and ambition.
