Butetown History And Arts Centre

Butetown History & Arts Centre collects, preserves and interprets the social and cultural history of migrants, immigrants and minorities in Wales. Through our exhibitions, books, cultural events and other educational resources, we seek to promote public awareness and understanding of Wales as a culturally and ethnically diverse nation.

Education is central to the work of the Centre – it is a means of sharpening social awareness, increasing understanding and inspiring action. The Centre began in 1988 as a local people’s history project meeting weekly in the Butetown Community Centre.

Our archive continues to be the main source of interest from the general public, especially those with links to the old Docks and to Tiger Bay; and of historical reference for schools, colleges, writers, media. We are taking steps to preserve and upgrade the archive and make it more accessible for use by the public.

Art, through exhibitions, performance and the development of an permanent exhibition space has grown in importance for the centre and has been a successful delivery agent, enabling local artists to display their work and for multi cultural art exposure to the general public.
