The Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust

Formed in 2000, our Trust is managed by 12 Trustees who are all volunteers. We currently (June 2015) have 1250 members from all over the world, but mostly local to the canals we are restoring.

Founded 2000

  • Mission statement

We are working to restore the 25 miles of the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals back to navigation, which will also provide a safe "green corridor" for cyclists, walkers, joggers, anglers, artists and nature lovers to use, as well as boaters. The health benefits of this project are well researched, as many more people choose to use the routes of canals for regular exercise, even if it means leaving the car at home and just walking or cycling to work and school. We are also restoring canal-side buildings and using them for new purposes, but retaining their important heritage and history. The work involves increasing bio-diversity when water is returned to the dry bed of the canals. This adds aquatic plant life as well as fish, newts, bank voles and invertibrates that would not otherwise be there. This work is creating many temporary jobs during restoration, but will also create permanent employment when complete and regenerate communities that grew up in the canal era that have since fallen on hard times. The restored canals will bring significant income into local economies. This will mostly be derived from tourism, but many locals will visit such places as Thomas Telford @ Wappenshall Junction and the Ditherington Flaxmill/Maltings in addition to Blists Hill Victorian Museum. Schools will also use many of the places along the canals to study their history and heritage. After all, the canals played a key part in the Industrial Revolution, of which Britain is justifiably proud.
