Court Based Personal Support

The PSU helps people going through the court process without legal representation. We provide trained volunteers who give free assistance to people facing proceedings in civil and family courts.

Founded 2001

  • Mission statement

The Personal Support Unit (PSU) is an independent charity that helps people going through the court process without legal representation. We provide trained volunteers who give free, independent assistance to people facing proceedings in civil and family courts and tribunals. Our service is offered equally to everyone who asks and it is confidential, impartial and open to all.

Requests vary from the very simple to the complex. Some people require practical help and some just need to talk through their case. Many people request the emotional and moral support of being accompanied in hearings.

Our vision is that every person in England and Wales attending a court or tribunal alone should have access to a PSU volunteer.

We are determined to do more to help the growing number of litigants in person in the most cost-efficient way: it costs less than £25 every time we help a client.

We have over 500 fully trained and experienced volunteers, who together helped more than 38,000 people gain access to justice in the last twelve months.

Our service adapts to the needs of each individual. Our volunteers work with clients to establish for themselves what might be the next best step to pursue their case, and help them to access legal advice from other organisations where appropriate.
