  • Mission statement

    ELDS’s main concern is for the Deaf person and their family in the community and that person’s right to full participation; to the same opportunities in education, employment, access and involvement as anyone else. ELDS achieves its vision through three main routes: Advocacy, Information and Services. Some of the services we provide are: Courses - in British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness; Apprenticeships and employment opportunities for deaf people (the majority of our staff are deaf); Interpreters - we provide a professional interpreting service at a wide range of events all over the North West; Children and Young People - Our services are aimed at families with children and teenagers where a member of the family is Deaf. We support Deaf and hard of hearing children irrespective of the nature, onset or level of their deafness. We support Deaf children who use sign language, those who use oral/aural forms of communication and Deaf children with Cochlear Implants. We also support families with Deaf parents. Our vision is to see Deaf children fully integrated into a receptive society. We provide Home Support Visits; Homework Clubs; Supporting Ethnic Families; Activity Clubs; Language & Community Development; Baby and Toddler Nursery for deaf and hearing children; Supporting Deaf Youth. We also provide domiciliary care for people of all ages with communication barriers, new technologies for the hearing impaired and a Signphone service, as well as computer repairs.

    • To provide education (from babies to adults) to Deaf people.
    • To provide volunteering opportunities, apprenticeships and employment through our many social enterprises.
