Tyneside Cinema

Tyneside Cinema is an independent arts cinema housed in a Grade II listed building in central Newcastle. We are passionate about engaging the public with film and digital media of the highest quality.

Founded 1973

  • Mission statement

The Tyneside Cinema is one of the most significant full-time independent arts cinemas in the UK, bringing in over 400,000 visitors a year, and an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation.

Tyneside Cinema is a very successful charity, passionate about working with film and digital media and producing innovative work in digital creativity. We provide year round programmes of independent and foreign language film and digital media arts, from our grade II listed venue in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne.

A beloved local landmark and welcoming destination for people of all ages and walks of life, the cinema is also a free heritage attraction, as the UK’s last operational former newsreel theatre.

We are an educational charity, helping over 6,000 young people annually to express themselves through film and media art. We actively engage with new audiences especially young people, students, unemployed, mothers and babies, patrons with learning disabilities and the over 60’s. The cinema works in numerous partnerships every year and the building is a well-used hub for the wider creative media industries in the North East.

We have recently undergone a £1. 3m renovation to open a new café/bar, showing film and live performance as well as underpinning our future sustainability, and simultaneously opened The Gallery - a new dedicated space to showcase digital and media arts, the only such free gallery space in the North.
