Phoenix is a specialist bereavement support service that offers support for children, young people and their families when someone close to them dies. Support is individual, group or family based.

Founded 2011

  • Mission statement

Our mission is to support children and young people between the ages of 5 and 21 (25 for vulnerable adults) in Herefordshire and border areas, who experience the death of someone close to them. We empower families, carers, volunteers and professionals to provide support for bereaved children. We advocate in the best interests of bereaved children, young people and their families. This is achieved by focusing on 4 outcomes:
    1) We receive referrals from GPs, social workers, parents/carers and others. One a referral is received we carry out an assessment to gauge the level of support needed and offer one to one support where appropriate.
    2) We offer families social therapeutic group sessions so that gradually they can build confidence and begin to socialise with others again. We offer workshops where participants spend time sharing memories, building resilience, confidence & communication skills.
    3) We offer support and training for teachers and pastoral care support in schools to help support students who have experienced a family bereavement and also provide general support to schools where a teacher or other staff member has died.
    4) We increase awareness through social media channels, information we publish, events, talks and press releases.
Our holistic approach is backed by modern research citing outcomes for bereaved children are better when support extends to family inclusion.
