Dental Wellness Trust
Dental Wellness Trust
The Dental Wellness Trust is a charity promoting dental wellness to less fortunate communities in the UK and abroad. We do this through education and innovative oral health programmes.
The Dental Wellness Trust believes that oral and dental health is a neglected health concern. There are millions of children worldwide who have never owned a toothbrush, let alone visited the dentist.
The Dental Wellness Trust aims to change this by giving toothbrushes to those who cannot afford one. It also runs supervised brushing sessions which teach children about the importance of brushing their teeth, washing their hands and eating healthily in order to avoid dental health problems in the future.
Oral health problems have an effect on people's overall physical, social and psychological wellbeing. By instilling a routine of brushing teeth in a generation of children, they will have a routine of maintaining a healthy mouth to last them a lifetime. It is relatively cheap to do, and saves on expensive tooth extractions later down the line.
We mainly work in South Africa, where over 80% of children suffer from tooth decay and over half of all school absences are due to dental health problems. We also carry out work in the UK, Israel and Rwanda.
The DWT is also involved in elderly oral health care, which is an area of dental health that needs to be improved. People are living longer and with that comes the need for a strong elderly care strategy. We are opening education centres in Cape Town and London to foster cooperation and learning, allowing people to share knowledge and train people to take better care of elderly people's mouths.
Dental Wellness Trust aims to:
- Donate toothbrushes to children living in deprived areas of the world.
- Teach children about the importance of oral health.
- Improve the standard of care for the elderly.
- Provide improved access affordable dental care for people living in deprived areas.
