Forward Arts Foundation

Forward Arts Foundation makes poetry heard. We organise National Poetry Day & we celebrate the best of the year's poetry through the Forward Prizes for Poetry and the Forward Book of Poetry.

Founded 1991

  • Mission statement

Forward Arts Foundation's mission has historically been stated in its Trustees’ annual report as “the advancement of education and in particular the promotion of contemporary poetry”. The charity has fulfilled this mission for 22 years by publishing poetry books and holding poetry competitions.

More recently, with the Winning Words Olympics project, FAF defined itself by its “ambition to transform the perception of poetry in the public sphere”.

Since we seek to put the best poetry before the best audience, our mission is in three words: Making poetry heard

  • Aims

    Forward Arts Foundation aims to:

    • To identify and celebrate excellent contemporary poetry
    • To extend poetry’s audience, reaching those who have little or no contact with poetry. The word “audience” includes but is not limited to readership
    • To improve literacy using poetry
    • To raise poetry’s profile, giving it a more visible and influential position in UK culture and altering the perception that it is marginal art
    • To link people to poetry in innovative and critically-acclaimed collaborations with other art forms (film, sculpture, music, performance)
