Young Asian Voices

Young Asian Voices (YAV) was set up in 1996 benefit the BME and host community in particular young people, working for equality of opportunity and social justice for all people in the City of Sunderland. We create empowering opportunities for young people through training, volunteering, outreach, integration and youth sessions. We currently support over 300 young people through our work in the local community, local schools and detached youth work. We also have a network of partner agencies that approach us for joint initiatives to tackle specific youth needs in the community. We provide social, educational and training activities to support young people to address present inequalities existing in Sunderland. YAV also provides a support mechanism to all individuals to help, identify and resolve issues through a diverse range of youth work programmes and activities. We also provide a platform of opportunities to all young people, both male and female, to be involved in the decision making process through our Youth Committee and volunteering, helping to shape the services we provide. All volunteers within the project are provided with relevant training to improve their employment prospects through volunteering with our youth sessions and sports activities. We are the only recognised group in Sunderland catering for young people within the BME community and are faced with a growing demand for the services we deliver with increased issues around developing youth culture and integration with the host community.
