The Libra Foundation

The Libra Foundation takes UK Sixth Form students to Romania to work with disabled and disadvantaged children. We run innovative programmes to integrate, educate and improve the quality of life for abandoned and disabled children, including from the Rroma community.

Founded 2008

  • Mission statement

Libra's aims are to: Improve the quality of life for children and young people in Romania, especially those who are disabled or disadvantaged; Enhance the education of UK sixth form and University students; Develop child welfare professionals through training for carers and staff at centres on Romania, seeking to share best practice for continuing professional development, and; Encourage Romanian secondary school pupils to volunteer in order to provide sustained support all year round.
Libra provides children from residential centres, the Rroma community and mainstream schools with art, craft, music and sporting activities each summer, to encourage mutual understanding and respect. We also provide a camping experience for the more able children as well as additional experiences such as going to the park, into town and on day trips. Our UK students learn about commitment and loyalty, planning and organisation, teamwork and leadership. They develop greater self confidence and a new awareness of the world around them.
