Founded 2014

  • Mission statement

Porridge and Rice are working to improve the quality and accessibility of education available to children living in the slums of Nairobi. Many of the children receive very little food due to poverty and neglect so to enable children to learn, Porridge and Rice are setting up and running feeding program in partnership with community schools - we believe it is not possible to learn on an empty stomach. In addition, Porridge and Rice are working to improve the education provided to the children by facilitating teacher training - most teachers in community schools have no more than a high school education, and while well-meaning, hard-working and talented, simply do not have the training and knowledge to provide a high quality education. Furthermore, Porridge and Rice are assisting with facilities maintenance. Most community schools are no more than corrugated tin rooms and frequently in poor condition. For example, roofs have holes thus leaking during the rain and early morning learning is done by candle as rooms have not been connected to electricity. Lastly, Porridge and Rice are working to improve awareness in the UK of the challenges facing the poor of Nairobi and provide ways that people can provide practical help through its volunteer program. The overall aim is to equip the poor of Nairobi with a top quality education them and thus enable them to improve their own lives and their own country.
