Caritas Anchor House

Caritas Anchor House provides shelter to over 250 homeless people each year and gives them the skills and support they need to build a better life for themselves.

Founded 1962

  • Mission statement

Caritas Anchor House is the largest organisation tackling homelessness in Newham, East London, which has the highest percentage of homelessness in the population in the UK. We offer specialised support for education, training, substance misuse and offending to our residents and the local community. Our aim is to tackle the root causes of homelessness.

Every year, we provide a safe and stable environment to more than 250 people who have lost their homes. In addition to our residents, our services are used by people facing unemployment and destitution in the wider community – we had in excess of 15,000 individual visits to our services last year and over 600 people from the community benefited from our accredited vocational training courses.

Caritas Anchor House works with the most marginalised and vulnerable groups in the community – the homeless, the workless, ex-offenders, those who face problems with domestic violence, mental health and substance misuse. We do this by empowering people and equipping them with the skills they need to find full-time employment, to move on to independent living and to contribute in a meaningful way to society. We have a proven model that works and leaves a long-lasting impact on people’s lives.

Newham is a region of acute deprivation facing a housing crisis, and there are no other organisations in the area that provide the specific focus that we do on this blend of accommodation, skills training and personal rehabilitation.
