Charity information

The organisation conducts scientific research to increase the value of lesser-known crop species in order to improve nutrition and increase income of resource-poor farmers.

Founded 2005

  • Mission statement

Crop-Innovations aims to improve food security along with the health and income of people in developing countries through research on plant seed that will facilitate agricultural biodiversity.

At present, much of the world's agriculture is dominated by around thirty plant species, leaving thousands of other edible plants under threat of extinction. Increasing agricultural diversity will raise productivity, create more robust yields, improve nutrition and reduce unsustainable environmental impacts. The development of currently under-utilised crops is key to improving the livelihoods of resource-poor farmers that grow them and to the conservation of biological diversity. Crop-Innovations provides research support to identify and solve problems encountered by farmers and consumers with the seed of under-utilised crops by:
•Conducting demand-driven research to remove seed-related restrictions to efficient crop production
•Providing expertise in problem diagnosis and bespoke technology
•Creating partnerships in the U. K. And internationally
    •Capacity building
•Managing experiments and trials to improve seed traits for farmer and consumer
•Working with stakeholders to ensure usability of end products
•Adapting science and technology to help resource-poor farmers

  • Aims

    Crop-Innovations aims to:

    • To ensure a food secure future by promoting agricultural diversity
    • To develop technologies that allow farmers to increase the value of indigenous crops
    • To conduct research that removes constraints to increase usage of underutilised crops
