Youth Education Support Services London

YESS provides support and education for young people who are not able to attend school or have left school but not been able to move forward in education training or employment.

Founded 2003

  • Mission statement

YESS works primarily with the young people in the locality situated in Camberwell Green on the border between the Peckham and the Brixton gangs. For the young people themselves who come to YESS, the social infrastructure is appalling: there is nothing to do and some young men cannot even step outside their narrowly defined community without serious risk to life and limb. The sense of community is that derived from having a common enemy not a genuine and purposeful state of being. Virtually all families in the area of the beneficiaries are single parent families, of minor ethnic groupings and some have no family member who are in employment. YESS is inclusive – it is small – but it works effectively with a significant number and within their wider communities of extended families, schools, friends and acquaintances. There is a rippling effect out into the communities around the individual lives which really change for the better. Individuals experience life changes and successes: the youngsters dream of being rap artists and even still, footballers, as a way of being lifted out from their communities. YESS succeeds in that it empowers youngsters and enables them to succeed within their communities. The most remarkable outcome is the stream of qualifications obtained by all who attend the project. The consequence of these successes is exhibited in raised self-esteem, renewed aims and expectations: the building blocks of changed lives.
