Home-Start Sutton

Home-Start Sutton works with local vulnerable families with young children by providing trained peer volunteers who visit each week to offer regular and long-term emotional and practical support.

Founded 1984

  • Mission statement

Home-Start Sutton's mission is to help give children the best possible start in life, supporting parents as they grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships with their children and widen their links with the local community. Families may be facing challenges such as: post-natal depression, social isolation, domestic violence, the disability of a parent or child. We train, place and supervise volunteers who visit weekly to give long-term emotional and practical support and run small nurturing family support groups rooted in the local community, offering a safe space for isolated vulnerable parents to meet and children to play.
A chaotic or neglectful family life is detrimental to children but many families in hardship are suffering from circumstances beyond their control.
Our volunteers are drawn from the community where they work; they are rigorously trained, vetted and supervised. Our comprehensive preparation course also equips volunteers with skills and experience that will help many of them into paid employment, additional training or community work.
Where appropriate we encourage and enable parents who are supported by Home-Start Sutton go on to become volunteers supporting other parents. Thus increasing the social value to the local community
