Timespan Museum and Arts Centre

Timespan is a museum and archive, café, gift shop and the only public contemporary art gallery in Sutherland in the North Highlands of Scotland, one of Europe’s most beautiful and remote regions.

Founded 1986

  • Mission statement

Timespan is based in the coastal village of Helmsdale in the most northerly region of the UK mainland, recognised as one of Europe’s most remote, rural areas. Timespan is a lifeline, not only for the community, but for the ongoing preservation of the area’s unique heritage, environment and culture. As a museum and art gallery it provides a resource for the presentation and promotion of heritage and arts, maintaining a collection based on the built, natural and cultural heritage of the area. Timespan presents a programme of contemporary arts and runs activities for the education and enjoyment of arts and heritage. It aims to foster creative development and community participation for children and young people in an area where access to cultural activity is very limited.

Timespan has achieved much in a quarter of a century and wants to do more to
    - strengthen its position as a vital hub for social cohesion and cultural engagement
    - develop as a centre of excellence in bridging art, heritage and community
    - become a leading exponent of contemporary art, within the UK and Europe
    - preserve and enliven the rich heritage and ecology of one of Europe’s most remote landscapes
    - support and develop the community, buildings and environment for the good of future generations
    - create a sustainable future
    - improve quality of service and enhance service offering
    - embrace innovation and new technologies
    - support and motivate its people, developing their skills
