The Edward Barnsley Educational Trust

The goal of the Edward Barnsley Educational Trust is to keep valuable craft skills alive. It employs apprentices who have natural practical skills and teaches them to become the top furniture-makers of the future.

Founded 1980

  • Mission statement

The Trust is based in Froxfield, in rural Hampshire at the workshop of Edward Barnsley CBE (1900-1987). His approach to furniture making was rooted in the English Arts & Crafts movement and he became one of the most influential designer-makers of the 20th century.

It has become almost impossible for aspiring cabinetmakers to receive training in a real workshop. Most furniture workshops cannot afford the time or money needed to train apprentices properly. In 1980, to help solve this problem, Edward Barnsley and some supporters founded the Trust.

The Trust is unique because its main objective is to enable apprentices to make furniture that has been commissioned by clients. Apprentices do this under the guidance and tuition of experienced craftsmen. There is a great demand for the training we offer. We usually have ten times more applicants than we can take on. We are eager to continue and, if we can secure further funding, expand our training programme.

To summarise we are an educational charitable trust that provides opportunities and a nurturing environment for talented persons to become the leading cabinet-makers of the future.

Training with skilled furniture-makers is very hard to find. Furniture workshops cannot afford the time or money needed to employ apprentices and train them properly. Without training opportunities like those provided by the Trust there will not be a new generation of skilled craftspeople.
