Are the oldest and largest coeliac disease charity in the world and we have been working for people with coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis since 1968.
“We want to see a world full of choice for people with coeliac disease and DH and eventually a world free of the condition”.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease caused by intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Some people are also sensitive to oats. The only treatment is a life-long gluten-free diet.
Coeliac UK’s mission is to improve the lives of people with coeliac disease and DH. We do this by:
•providing independent and expert information and support to those affected by coeliac disease and their family and friends
•campaigning for better access to diagnosis and care and better access to food in and out of the home
•researching the nature of the disease and potential cures.
With 1 in 100 people with the condition but only 24% of these diagnosed, we estimate there are nearly 500,000 people in the UK who have coeliac disease but don’t know and suffer unnecessarily.
Coeliac UK aims to:
- We have pledged to support the growth of gluten-free food labeling by manufacturers and retailers, and to have ten of the top 20 food brands labeling gluten-free by 2020.
- We have pledged to have at least two gluten-free labelled options in each of the top 20 eating out chains by 2020.
- Our ultimate aim is to find a cure for the disease. We pledge to raise £5million over seven years to fund further research into coeliac disease.
