Contact empowers young people to become leaders in both the arts and their communities. We redefine theatre for the 21st Century, presenting and producing truly diverse performance and events.
Contact is a unique multi-disciplinary arts venue set up for the sole purpose of engaging, inspiring and advancing young people. We re-opened in 1999 with a new building and ethos, to engage, support and develop emerging artists in achieving excellence through cultural activity, to provide young people with a diverse and rich progressive experience of the arts, and produce and receive leading-edge performance - new kinds of theatre that young people could and would access. We are highly regarded within the UK and in the international performing arts industry for pioneering programmes of work with young people from a range of economically and socially challenging backgrounds. We enable young people discover their talents and passions and reconnect with the world around them.
We put young people and their ideas at the forefront of our work; enabling them as decision-makers across the organisation. We support young board members, young persons interview panels, youth marketing teams, young programmers and young creative consultants who provide training and facilitation to a range of organisations and policy-makers nationwide, on how to engage successfully with young people, how cultural policies affect young people, and their experiences developing as young creative artists and leaders. At Contact young people are able to take creative risks in a safe and supported environment. We inspire future theatre-makers, trail-blazing artists and creative leaders to begin life-changing journeys. Over the past nine years we have provided opportunities for young people and emerging artists, many of whom could not follow the traditional routes into the arts. They are given time, space, support, guidance and feedback as they develop their skills in the broadest possible context and shape themselves as pioneers of, and contributors to, theatre for the future.
Contact aims to:
- GLOBALLY DIGITAL:We will use new technology in all of our art and communication, ensuring that anything we produce has local, national and international reach the moment it is created.
- MANCHESTER TO THE WORLD: We will raise our profile so that everyone from every community to know who we are, where we are and the amazing work that we do.
- INSPIRING PROGRESS: We will offer young people from a diverse range of communities, opportunities and support to progress through life changing journeys from participant to professional artist.
- VITAL TO THE CREATIVE ECONOMY: We will work entrepreneurially to provide employment opportunities for young people and generate income so we can inspire progression and innovate artistically.
