Cheek by Jowl Theatre Company

Cheek by Jowl is an artist-led, international theatre company based in the UK and currently working in three languages: English, French and Russian. Described by Time Magazine as ‘one of the ten great theatre companies in the world’, Cheek by Jowl was established in 1981 by Artistic Directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod. The company has developed an international reputation for bringing ‘fresh life to the classics using intense, vivid performances like a laser of light to set the text ablaze’ (The Guardian). Currently an Associate Company at the Barbican Centre in London, Cheek by Jowl productions have been performed in 143 different locations around the UK and in over 300 cities in 40 countries, spanning six continents.

The statutory objective of the Charity is to promote, maintain, improve, and advance education in the Arts. Cheek by Jowl achieves this through the creation and touring of theatrical productions. Cheek by Jowl also has a participation scheme committed to increasing young peoples’ engagement with theatre of the highest quality through the provision of masterclasses, workshops, and introductory talks.
